Besides this Abbottabad has been the administrative centre of the N.W.F.P and Hazara Division. The history of Hazara is rich in culture and has contributed tremendously in creation of Pakistan. | The principal professor dr. A. J. Khan in his speech welcomed the distinguished chief guest Admiral Noman Bashir NI (M) chief of Pakistan navy & pro chancellor of Bahria university, the rector Bahria university, vice admiral (r) Muhammad Haroon hi (m), the registrar Bahria university, Cdr. Mumtaz Raza, members of college faculty, the graduating doctors and their parents, and all the other guests.
Over the very important event for us the 2009 convocation and agree to award MBBS degree to the graduating doctors.
Medicine is a noble still the most sought after & profession and last year over 7500 students joined medical colleges in the country but, another over 30,000 having passed their f.sc examination in 1st division and desiring to become doctors did not succeed. Some of them who could afford financially do go abroad. Because the medical education abroad in countries like UK, USA is not available to them; they proceed to countries like Russia and central Asian republics, China, east Europe and carbean countries where most of the medical colleges are not recognized and these student waste time and money. By saying this he wished to point out that there is a great demand and great need for more doctors in Pakistan. At present in Pakistan 150,000 doctors and 9000 dentists are registered. Out of which about 20,000 doctors are in the USA and another about 20,000 in other countries like u.k, Ireland and the middle east leaving behind hardly 100,000 doctors which are quite insufficient for the needs of 170 millions people of Pakistan. More doctors are needed to be trained.
In this kind of background establishment of Bahria University medical college has been a relief in fulfilling the shortage of doctors in the country.
Recalling the history he added that FMC was established 13 years ago. During the periods while he was the president of PMDC and the director general of health, govt. Of Pakistan, when he had an opportunity to visit many medical colleges usually called medical schools in many countries abroad. It was found that the best medical schools numbering 127 are in the USA with an intake of 17000 students yearly. Out of these 127 medical schools in the USA 43 are in private sector and 84 in public sector. It was found that the private medical schools were far superior; their education was considered better are their hospitals were better and more research oriented. These private sector schools are more expensive their tuition fee is around 40 to 50,000 dollars a year as compared to USA govt. Medical schools where the tuition fee is around 12000 to 18,000 dollars a year. Inspite of this difference in fee almost every budding doctor wishes to go to the private sector medical school. Graduate doctors and specialists wish to work and do post-graduation in these private medical schools and their hospitals. These private sector medical schools of the USA are well known and respected all over the world like, the Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Yale, Stanford, Columbia etc. On the other hand govt. Medical schools are hardly known; even the best known the like state of New York university medical school Albany, state of Alabama university medical school and Birmingham etc, are hardly known especially overseas.
It was in this context that together with some experienced medical teachers it was decided to establish an outstanding medical school, which may develop in the same or similar respect as the above mentioned medical schools, like Harvard which perhaps is considered the top medical school was established 230 years ago at a small village Cambridge Massachusetts. He hoped that in the coming year fmc also would develop such reputation. However even in these early years fmc has acquired an excellent reputation, the students of fmc are performing extremely well in national and international postgraduate examinations and they are very much respected. Our aim of training and teaching the students is not just to make them read the books & pass examinations but we try to inculcate in them the desire to serve the ailing humanity and to look like respectable doctors, behave like a doctor and respected like doctor, so we stress on good manners, kindness, humanity and impeccably dressed distinguishes from others from distance. I myself and the college faculty are proud that we through their devotion they are able to produce such outstanding doctors and these doctors are being presented to you for award of MBBS degrees.
He also expressed his gratitude to the Bahria University established only 9 years ago. And it had developed a unique reputation and the graduates with Bahria university degree are preferably welcomed all over the country, the middle east and abroad. FMC is with this university from its very beginning and shared in developing its reputation in the medical field. The establishment of Bahria university medical college at Karachi is an outstanding achievement and the major credit was that of Admiral Noman Bashir it was his guidance and advice and assistance that it became possible to establish this medical college at Karachi. In view of its reputation as an outstanding hospital PNS Shifa as the teaching hospital of this medical college, and discrete selection of its faculty, Bahria university medical college has already made a mark, He congratulated of Admiral Noman Bashir and the university staff, particularly its administrative staff, the rector vice admiral (r) Haroon, pro-rector (r) rear admiral shahid latif, the registrar Cdr. (r) Mumtaz Raza, cdr. (r) Asif, Capt. Abbasi and ofcourse the outgoing rector vice Admiral farooq Rashid. Bahria university medical college, Inshallah will establish a name in future and with this name, admiral Noman Bashir would always remain associated.
He further apprised the audience that Medical education in the country is regulated and controlled by PMDC and its services in guidance and advice to as many as 70 medical colleges was admired as it is a very difficult task. Only couple a weeks ago PMDC team and Principal FMC visited the us ministry of education in Washington, where the us govt. Considers critically the system of education in each country and that he was proud to say our system of education was unanimously admired by all the members of the us education dept present. As against some of the major countries who had to reappear & provide more information and improvement or to appear again before this forum in 6 months or after 12 months time to be re-considered. All this has been achieved due to efforts of the PMDC leadership its president Prof. Sibt ul Hasnain & registrar dr. Nadeem Akbar.
The total number of doctor in the country presently and is 140,000 dentists about 9500 but for a population of over 170 millions these numbers are not enough especially because about 20,000 of our doctors are in the USA and also a large number in UK & the Middle East. The govt. Of Pakistan, health division is making its best efforts to fulfill the need of the doctors, dentists, nurses & Para-medical staff and at the same time maintain the high standard of health care and education quality. The efforts of health division and the health dept. need also to be admired.
He further pointed out that our students who may not have obtained the highest marks in f.sc at the time of admission, as the students scoring highest marks usually go to govt. Medical colleges where education is more or less free to them these students are being trained in such a way that they are not only the best behaved doctors, symbol of humality, they have scored position above their campatriots from other colleges and this fulfils our main objective to produce better, polite humble and impressive looking doctors as compared to those who go to the public sector and other institutions. As most the students who get admission in medical or other professional colleges or in the armed forces, they had their education in private schools & colleges
The Principal recollected the services of the late father of Admiral Noman Bashir
Mr. Bashir-ud-din held the distinguished position in the NWFP govt. As the chairman board of revenue, is a beautiful place, with pleasant climate, conducive atmosphere for good education and the friendly nature of the people of Hazara and ofcourse a peaceful city due to the efforts of local administration and the local govt. whose chief the commissioner of Hazara, dig and DCO were of great help in arranging this function.
The presence of Chief guest among the people of Hazara and the presence of such distinguished guests a from other provinces was thrilling & that is why the Principal wanted them to know about the FMC college and the university, the contribution of the Chief Guest to Pakistan and to medical education and the local dignitaries is making proud of him for his visit to this distinguished institution.
The children of almost all dignitaries sitting here go to public schools like burn hall, Abbottabad public school, city school & beacon house rather than receiving free education at govt. Schools and colleges. In the same way and like in the USA in coming years students will gradually prefer to go to private sector medical schools.
He once again expressed his thanks to the Chief Guest, and his team from Bahria University Islamabad and other distinguished guests to have honoured FMC by their presence in the function.
Normally on such occasions the colleges usually put up their problems and demands. Luckily we have no problems and no demands, however because of your association with this area and your having spared so much time for us and your interest in health & medical education, we shall feel greatly honoured if for those students who stand first in your university professional examination and given some special scholarships.

| The Rector in his beginning remarks advised all the graduates to receive their degrees on this memorable occasion with a smile & secure pleasure and also encouraged the audience to give oration to those who earned & received gold medals + add the amended speech for the FMC whish.
The expressed his pleasure for holding the convocation 2009 which is a landmark in the history of collaboration between FMC and Bahria University & for being affiliated with the University ever since the beginning of the University. Since in 2001 eight batches of doctors have graduated and the ninth batch is at present taking their final examination.
This joint effort has produced 452 doctors so far who after registration with PMDC are now serving in various government. And other hospitals at home and abroad, looking after the well being of our people as well as the world population at large in different countries of the world. It has been our constant effort to serve the nation by providing quality educational opportunities to our youth.
It is gratifying to note that FMC is recognized not only by PMDC, but by the GMC (General Medical Council) of UK and ECFMG (Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) of the USA.
Many graduates of FMC have passed not only FCPS Pakistan exam, but they have also passed USMLE of the USA and PLAB of UK.
Bahria University was established in the year 2000 and Frontier Medical College has been a partner from the very beginning. This partnership has been rewarding and is of great mutual benefit.
He highlighted the role of Prof. Dr. A. J. Khan the acclaimed, medical educationist a former President of PMDC and a former Federal Minister has provided immense help in establishment of medical / health sciences at the university and that we have been able to establish our own constituents’ medical college, Bahria University Medical College at Karachi. His wide experience & vision has been an asset to the University. He has been the Chairman Board of Studies. At present the university has four affiliated medical colleges. The University in very near future would establish post graduate medical education in medical sciences as there is great dearth of medical teachers, specialists and consultants especially in basic medical sciences. A lot of spade work has already been done to start M.Phil/Ph.D programmes and with the grace of God we, within this year will be able to launch these post-graduate educational programmes.
Convocation is a great day in the life of graduates, something they will always remember and cherish this day, their dreams more than that the dreams of their parents have been realized. Seventeen years of hard work, 22 years of their educational process has at last brought a very rewarding fruits. Their parents, teachers, mentors have nurtured them with their earning, experience and prayers. On their part they have burned midnight oil to achieve this degree. There is no doubt that they have undergone intense heat and cold of all weathers, medical studies are perhaps one of the hardest training programmes, may have looked impossible at times but they have eventually conquered the challenge, but remember this is the beginning you have to do post graduation, learn more and serve the ailing humanity to the best of your ability.
My congratulations to all of you, your parents as well as the faculty members of the college.
God be with you, I wish you all the best in your future life. |
