Medical Education

The college prepares students for the five year course leading to the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery) degree, which is equivalent to the basic M.D. degree of the U.S.A., Europe and the Middle East.

MBBS degree of Frontier Medical College is recognized by PMDC (Pakistan Medical & Dental Council) and, GMC (General Medical Council) of UK. It is also recognized by ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical graduates) of USA.

• It is included in the WHO list of recognized medical colleges.
• The college is affiliated to the public sector Bahria University
• It is recognized for USMLE and PLAB test. FMC is included in IMED (International Medical Education Directory)

Graduates of FMC after registration with PMDC are working in various teaching and other hospitals at home and abroad. It is on basis of this degree that many of them have passed the USMLE Step-I, PLAB part-I FCPS-I examination

1. Institutional Objectives

The objectives of teaching and training at Frontier Medical College are to produce a comprehensive doctor according to PMDC regulations with the following characteristics:

Possesses knowledge and skills to undertake preventive and curative care at primary care level and obtain specialist help where necessary.
Is aware of global disease patterns and be able to function within the country as well as in a global setting.
Is capable of continuing self-education leading to post-graduation.
Possesses leadership qualities and communication skills in order to function as a leader of the health team.
Is aware of local customs and socio-cultural constraints, and how they influence health in the community.
Has understanding of scientific basis of medicine.

2. Methodology of teaching

Integrated system of teaching of the basic and clinical medical sciences.
Small groups teaching instead of large classes. Small number of students can do and observe dissection and perform practicals better as there is closer interaction between them and their teachers.
Use of computer laboratory to facilitate the learning process. Internet facility is available to the students and staff to learn about the latest advances in Medicine and medical teaching and to seek information from all over the world through World Wide Web
PBL (Problem Based Learning) commencing in the first year of the course.

3. Learning Tours in the Community

These are essential for developing confidence in students and awareness about the Community and its related health problem for every future doctor. Medical camps are held regularly. Students visit a specified rural area within about 50 km radius. They collect information and provide guidance and advice to the community, also imparting Health Education to mothers about sanitation, clean boiled water, importance of immunization, nutrition and the First Aid to deal with emergencies like accidents, heart attacks, diarrhea and acute respiratory infection (ARI) in children. Curative services are also provided to patients visiting these camps.

4. Guest Lectures

A system of regular lectures by prominent guest speakers about once a week are arranged. The guest speakers are prominent medical personalities, scientists, leading literary persons and senior civil and military officers. This gives exposure to students to hear and also to communicate with such outstanding national and international person.

5. Research by Students

Students are encouraged to undertake research activities from the very first year. Students are given projects mainly of epidemiological nature visiting the community and the local schools for collection of data. Some students are attached to clinical laboratories, to various hospital departments collecting information about social conditions, behavior and attitude of patients. This helps to bring out specific creative abilities of the students and in this way their talent is enhanced through vigorous coaching and research.

6. Clinico-Pathological Conferences and Seminars

In order to ensure the quality and better standard of medical education, weekly clinico- pathological conferences are held for fourth and final year students. Interesting cases are presented by students themselves in presence of their teachers. It is a valuable method of integrating clinical and basic subject. It also proves a platform to the students to discuss topics of practical importance with their teachers.

7. Tutorial Groups

In order to gain first hand information about curricular and co-curricular activities including social and financial problems of the students community as a whole or of an individual student, the college has organized tutorial groups.
All students of the college are divided in 25 groups. Each group of about 10 students has at least 2 students from each class. These groups are allocated to senior teachers of the college.
A specific time is allocated to these groups in the regular time-table.
The teachers concerned take the responsibility for properly looking after of the students of their respective groups. They are also responsible to see that the students attend their classes regularly, pass their internal assessment exams and to sort out any problem that they may face in the college or in the college hostels or in general life.
